Goth Subculture in Today's World
Goth is a modern subculture, not to be confused with the third century's East Germanic tribe. This group typically feels most comfortable with others within the group. The individuals within the group do not necessarily have to have very much in common to identify with each other. They may have very diverse backgrounds, religious beliefs, musical tastes, and hobbies. Black clothing is typically worn by goth people.
In modern history, this subculture started in the early 1980s. It stemmed from the punk subculture, since this was also a form of rebellion against the normal flow of society and its rules. The term was introduced as a comparison to pop music and ended up surviving long enough to become its own entity. The stereotypical look remained, though it has fluctuated through the years.
There are many reasons why one might turn to the goth subculture. Goths are free thinking people who do not always conform to the usual flow of society. This can earn them rejection from close-minded peers, spurring them on to find another group to fit in with. By associating with others who they can identify with, they can have a sense of belonging and allow them to function normally within society. However, this is definitely not the case for all goths. Some become attracted to the subculture because of its interesting look, its music, its clubs or just because they already have goth friends.
There are many stereotypes of the goth subculture, and not all of them are true. The most notable is of the clothing. Although many a goth poster child appears dressed in black from head to toe, pierced and tattooed, this is not indicative of the tastes of the entire subculture. There are many varying levels of this look, depending on each person's individual tastes and preferences. Many outsiders automatically assume that these people are involved in cults and pagan religions. Although this may be true of some individuals, the reality is that there is a diverse range of religious beliefs and mindsets within the subculture.
There are some clothing styles typically associated with the goth subculture, though not everyone wears them. Traditional goths tend to enjoy Victorian-style clothing, with corsets, petticoats and hats. Others prefer a more "industrial" look, with leather clothing featuring studs and buckles. Some enjoy wearing traditional dark makeup against their pale skin if they have a flair for the dramatic.
Tolerance is a big part of the goth subculture. Lack thereof is the reason many decide to join in. Within this subculture, the people are apt to be more open-minded and accepting of others than most. Those involved in this subculture are not afraid to be true to themselves or practice religions that are not mainstream, as they rarely have to worry about encountering prejudice.
Those interested in this subculture do not have to do anything special to join in. One must simply be of an open mind. And perhaps invest in some black clothing to fit in well within the goth subculture.
